Championship Over/Under Stats: Why Under 2.5 Is the Default
Two decades of Championship results show a division that sits just on the under side of 2.5 goals, with 2 the most common final count and clear splits between clubs.

- Championship matches over 2.5 (11,590)47.7%
- Fair odds, under 2.51.91
- Matches ending with exactly 2 goals25.5%
- Goals per game2.56
The Championship has a reputation as a chaotic, end-to-end league, and reputation is exactly what I try to look past. Before you open today's over 2.5 tips, it pays to know the base rate this division has produced across 11,590 league matches from 2005/06-2025/26.
The headline answer is plain. Only 47.7% of Championship matches went over 2.5 goals, at an average of 2.56 goals per game. That makes under 2.5, with fair odds of 1.91, the slight default rather than the exception. The rest of this file shows where that edge thins out and where it widens.
§ 1Two goals is the Championship's most common final count
This chart splits every match by its final goal count. The tallest bar is 2 goals at 25.5%, with 3 goals close behind at 22.6% and 1 goal at 19.1%. That cluster around two and three is why the 2.5 line is such a knife-edge here.
At the edges, games with 0 or 1 goal made up 26.9% combined, and only 7.8% finished goalless. The very open games are rarer still, with 6+ goals in just 4.4%.

| Share of 11,590 matches by final goal count | |
|---|---|
| 0 goals | 7.8% |
| 1 goal | 19.1% |
| 2 goals | 25.5% |
| 3 goals | 22.6% |
| 4 goals | 13.7% |
| 5 goals | 7.0% |
| 6+ goals | 4.4% |
What I take from this is that a single goal decides the 2.5 market in a huge share of Championship matches. The most likely single outcome sits just under the line, and that shapes how I read every price.
§ 2Fair odds for every Championship goal line
The table converts each hit rate into fair odds, which is 1 divided by the observed frequency with no margin. Over 1.5 landed in 73.1% (fair 1.37), over 2.5 in 47.7% (fair 2.10) and over 3.5 in 25.1% (fair 3.99). At the top end, over 4.5 came in 11.4%, a fair price of 8.76.
The 95% range on the 2.5 line is only ±0.9, so the sample is large enough that the under lean is not a quirk of a few odd seasons. If a price on the over sits well below 2.10 with nothing specific about the match behind it, the bookmaker is asking you to pay for the league's reputation.
| Line | Over | 95% range | Fair over | Fair under |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 | 92.2% | ±0.5 | 1.08 | 12.86 |
| 1.5 | 73.1% | ±0.8 | 1.37 | 3.72 |
| 2.5 | 47.7% | ±0.9 | 2.10 | 1.91 |
| 3.5 | 25.1% | ±0.8 | 3.99 | 1.33 |
| 4.5 | 11.4% | ±0.6 | 8.76 | 1.13 |
Fair odds = 1 ÷ observed rate, no margin.
§ 3Over 2.5 swings between seasons but stays near half
Season by season, the over 2.5 rate peaked at 52.2% in 2023/24 and bottomed out at 40.9% in 2020/21. The opening season, 2005/06, sat at 44.4%, while 2025/26 came in at 50.7% across 552 matches.
The over 1.5 line is steadier, ranging from 68.1% to 77.2% per season and standing at 76.4% in 2025/26. The broad picture is a league that wobbles around the halfway mark on 2.5 rather than trending sharply in either direction.

| 20/21 | 68.1% | 40.9% |
| 21/22 | 71.9% | 46.7% |
| 22/23 | 70.1% | 44.0% |
| 23/24 | 74.8% | 52.2% |
| 24/25 | 70.9% | 44.4% |
| 25/26 | 76.4% | 50.7% |
I treat a single high-scoring season with caution. Rates bounce a few points either side of the long-run figure, and those swings tell you more about variance than about a lasting change in how the division plays.
§ 4Home sides score more and concede less
The heatmap separates goals by venue. Home sides scored at least once in 76.5% of matches and twice or more in 41.9%. Away sides managed 67.8% and 31.1%.
The gap carries through to the bigger hauls and to defending. A side scored 3+ at home 17.0% of the time against 10.3% on the road, and home teams kept a clean sheet in 32.2% of matches compared with 23.5% for visitors.
View the data: championship team goals: home side vs away side
| Scores 1+ | Scores 2+ | Scores 3+ | Kept clean sheet | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home side | 76.5% | 41.9% | 17.0% | 32.2% |
| Away side | 67.8% | 31.1% | 10.3% | 23.5% |
For team totals, this matters more than the match line. Backing an away side to score twice in this division is asking for something that happens in under a third of matches.
§ 5QPR games run open, Millwall games stay tight
Across 2021/22-2025/26 the league over 2.5 rate was 47.6%, and the club chart shows the spread around it among the 21 clubs with at least 100 matches. QPR matches cleared 2.5 most often at 52.6% of 230, with Coventry and Swansea both on 52.2%. Norwich (51.6%) and Middlesbrough (51.1%) also sat above the league rate.
At the other end, Millwall matches went over only 38.3% of the time across 230 games. Luton (40.6%), West Brom (41.3%) and Stoke (42.4%) also leaned firmly towards the under.
League rate in the same seasons: 47.6%. Min 100 matches; 21 clubs qualified, top and bottom 7 shown.

| Swansea (230) | 52.2% |

| West Brom (230) | 41.3% |
| Luton (138) | 40.6% |
| Millwall (230) | 38.3% |
Even the highest club rates are only modestly above half, so a club tag shifts the odds a little rather than transforming them. The main caveat applies here most of all: these are records of what happened, and gaps of a few points can arise by chance, so I use them as one input alongside tempo, team news and conditions.
Almanac verdict
- Start from the under
- Over 2.5 landed in 47.7% of Championship matches, so under 2.5 at fair odds of 1.91 is the base case. Make the over earn its place with a specific reason.
- Respect the two-goal finish
- Exactly 2 goals is the most common outcome at 25.5%, just ahead of 3 goals at 22.6%. Expect many Championship over/under bets to hinge on one late goal.
- Weight clubs, don't worship them
- QPR matches went over in 52.6% and Millwall in 38.3% against a league rate of 47.6%. Use club splits to nudge your number, not to replace the match read.
