League Two Half-Time/Full-Time: How Safe Is a Half-Time Lead?
Across 21 seasons of League Two, a half-time lead is worth less here than anywhere else in my study, especially a single goal, and especially away from home.

- home sides 1 goal up at HT who won70.1%
- away sides 1 goal up at HT who won63.6%
- home HT leads converted overall76.2%
- Home/Home share of matches24.8%
A half-time lead in League Two feels like half the job done. Across 21 seasons and 11,476 matches, I wanted to know how much of the job it really is, at home and away, and how the pre-match price changes the route a favourite takes to victory. This is the file I would want open before backing any HT/FT double in the division.
The short answer is that a lead here is softer than the scoreline suggests. Home sides one goal up at the break won 70.1%, away sides 63.6%, and the overall home conversion rate of 76.2% was the lowest of the 22 European divisions I studied. If you use my double result predictions page, treat this as the league-specific base layer underneath it.
§ 1One goal is fragile, two goals nearly settle it
The chart splits every half-time leader by venue and by the size of the lead. A home side one goal up (2,704 matches) won 70.1%, drew 21.0% and lost 8.9%. An away side one goal up (2,198 matches) won 63.6%, drew 24.2% and lost 12.3%.
What strikes me is that the draw, not defeat, is where most of the damage happens. Roughly one in five home leads and one in four away leads were pegged back to level, and that is the outcome that quietly ruins a Home/Home or Away/Away ticket.
View the data: what a half-time lead is worth
| Leader won | Draw | Leader lost | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home led by 1 (2,704) | 70.1% | 21.0% | 8.9% |
| Home led by 2+ (1,025) | 92.4% | 6.3% | 1.3% |
| Away led by 1 (2,198) | 63.6% | 24.2% | 12.3% |
| Away led by 2+ (636) | 89.2% | 7.7% | 3.1% |
Double the margin and the picture changes completely. Home sides two or more up won 92.4% of the time (1,025 matches) and away sides 89.2% (636), with outright defeats at only 1.3% and 3.1%. In League Two the second goal before the break matters far more than the first.
§ 2Shorter favourites lead early; longer ones mostly fail
Here I followed the pre-match 1X2 favourite through its half-time and full-time path, grouped by price. Favourites at 1.40-1.69 (1,087 matches) went Fav/Fav 38.3% of the time and failed to win 38.9%. At 2.40+ (2,598 matches), Fav/Fav fell to 21.6% and the favourite failed to win 62.4%.
The second route to victory, level at the break and winning after it, ranged from 13.3% to 20.7% across the bands, and it was most common among the shortest favourites. Coming from behind was rare at every price: 2.1% in the 1.40-1.69 band and 2.7% at 2.40+.
Bands under 100 matches left out: Fav under 1.40 (87).
View the data: how favourites win, by pre-match price
| Fav/Fav | Draw/Fav | Behind/Fav | Fav did not win | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fav 1.40-1.69 (1,087) | 38.3% | 20.7% | 2.1% | 38.9% |
| Fav 1.70-1.99 (2,656) | 29.9% | 17.6% | 3.2% | 49.3% |
| Fav 2.00-2.39 (4,809) | 25.4% | 14.8% | 3.1% | 56.7% |
| Fav 2.40+ (2,598) | 21.6% | 13.3% | 2.7% | 62.4% |
The band under 1.40 is left out because it held only 87 matches. My reading is that a short League Two favourite earns a real share of its wins after a goalless or level first half, so Draw/Fav deserves a look alongside the obvious double.
§ 3Season conversion rates wander inside a narrow band
The line tracks the share of half-time leaders who went on to win, season by season. It bottomed out at 67.8% in 2005/06, peaked at 76.9% in 2014/15, and the latest complete season, 2025/26, came in at 71.2%.
There is no steady trend, just a band that the division keeps returning to. The 69.2% in 2019/20 rests on a curtailed season of 440 matches, so I give that point less weight than its neighbours.

The main caveat applies to everything on this page: these are past shares, not a forecast, and because HT/FT prices are not in the record, any fair odds built from them have not been checked against the market. Compare them with the price you are actually offered.
§ 4League Two produces fewer Home/Home results than elsewhere
The dumbbell sets each of the nine HT/FT results in League Two against the pooled other 21 divisions (144,700 matches). The biggest shortfall is Home/Home: 24.8% here (95% range ±0.8) against 26.5% elsewhere, a gap of −1.7 points and the lowest Home/Home share in the study.
The biggest surplus is Draw/Away, 11.6% against 10.7%, or +0.9 points. Away/Away also edges above the rest, 17.1% against 16.4%, and Draw/Draw sits slightly higher too.

| Other 21 divisions | League Two | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home/Home (2,843 matches) | 26.5% | 24.8% | ±0.8 |
| Draw/Home (1,674 matches) | 15.4% | 14.6% | ±0.6 |
| Away/Home (290 matches) | 2.6% | 2.5% | ±0.3 |
| Home/Draw (632 matches) | 5.2% | 5.5% | ±0.4 |
| Draw/Draw (1,906 matches) | 16.2% | 16.6% | ±0.7 |
| Away/Draw (580 matches) | 5.1% | 5.1% | ±0.4 |
| Home/Away (254 matches) | 2.0% | 2.2% | ±0.3 |
| Draw/Away (1,333 matches) | 10.7% | 11.6% | ±0.6 |
| Away/Away (1,964 matches) | 16.4% | 17.1% | ±0.7 |
Put together, it describes a league where home advantage at the break is thinner and away sides finish matches more often than the European norm. That is the Belgian lesson in another accent: when the gap between teams is small, the second half decides more.
Almanac verdict
- Price the draw first
- A home side one goal up at half-time drew 21.0% of the time, and an away side 24.2%. Before backing any lead-to-win double, ask whether the price covers that leak.
- Discount the away lead
- Away leaders by one goal won 63.6% against 70.1% at home, and lost outright 12.3% of the time. Treat Away/Away as a weaker proposition than its home mirror.
- Look past Fav/Fav at length
- Favourites at 2.40+ went Fav/Fav only 21.6% of the time and failed to win 62.4%. At those prices the favourite's double is a thin path, not a default.

Is Home/Home a good HT/FT bet in League Two?
