La Liga Best Bets: Most Reliable Home Favourites and Double Chance
Short-priced La Liga home sides win more often than their odds suggest, but only the shortest bands have turned that edge into a flat-stake profit.

- home favourites <1.30 won87.2%
- flat-stake return, home <1.30+1.8%
- return, all home favourites under 2.00โ0.7%
- longest losing run, home <1.303
When friends ask me for the one La Liga selection they should trust, they almost always mean a heavy home favourite. This file tests that instinct across 7,600 league matches. It asks how often those favourites actually win at each price, how far that sits from what the odds implied, and where a flat stake has held up. It is also the reference I check before anything from this league reaches my value betting picks page.
The headline answer is encouraging, with limits. Home favourites priced under 1.30 won 87.2% against 81.2% priced, and the 1.30โ1.49 band returned +4.3% at the main price. Once the price drifts past 1.50, the gap between priced and won narrows and the returns turn negative. Overall, all home favourites under 2.00 returned โ0.7%.
ยง 1The shortest La Liga home prices outperform their odds
This table backs the home win in every match of each price band. Read the Priced and Won columns side by side. Below 1.30 the gap is wide, at 81.2% priced against 87.2% won, and in the 1.30โ1.49 band it is wider still, at 68.1% priced against 75.0% won.
The two longer bands tell a different story. From 1.50โ1.69 the favourite won 61.0% against 59.5% priced, and from 1.70โ1.99 it won 53.0% against 51.7%. Those edges are thin enough for the bookmaker's margin to swallow, which is why both bands returned around โ3%.
| Home odds | Matches | Priced | Won | Return | Longest losing run |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| <1.30 | 572 | 81.2% | 87.2% | +1.8% | 3 |
| 1.30โ1.49 | 588 | 68.1% | 75.0% | +4.3% | 4 |
| 1.50โ1.69 | 777 | 59.5% | 61.0% | โ2.9% | 8 |
| 1.70โ1.99 | 1,160 | 51.7% | 53.0% | โ3.1% | 6 |
The losing-run column matters to anyone who stakes emotionally. The shortest band never lost more than 3 in a row, while the 1.50โ1.69 band once lost 8 in a row. That is a very different experience to sit through, even though the win rate still looks respectable.
ยง 2Best price turns thin edges into small profits
Here the same selections are shown at the main price and at the best price quoted. The 1.30โ1.49 band climbs from +4.3% to +8.3%, and the shortest band moves from +1.8% to +4.9%. Even the two weaker bands move to +1% at the best price.
The safety-first options are less flattering. Double chance 1X on home sides under 2.00 returned โ4.0% at the main price, and home draw no bet returned โ3.8%. Both only scrape into positive territory at the best price, at +0.3% and +0.7%.
Historical flat-stake return, not a forecast. Best price was not always obtainable.

| Main price | Best price | |
|---|---|---|
| Home win <1.30 | +1.8% | +4.9% |
| Home win 1.30โ1.49 | +4.3% | +8.3% |
| Home win 1.50โ1.69 | โ2.9% | +1.0% |
| Home win 1.70โ1.99 | โ3.1% | +1.0% |
| 1X, home under 2.00 | โ4.0% | +0.3% |
| Home DNB, home under 2.00 | โ3.8% | +0.7% |
| Home win, all under 2.00 | โ0.7% | +3.1% |
My honest reading is this. Returns this close to zero can appear by chance over a few thousand bets, and these prices come from one major bookmaker, captured at times that changed over the years. Treat this as a description of the past, not a system, and remember the best price was not always obtainable.
ยง 3Favourites under 1.50 beat their price every season
This is the chart that gives me the most conviction. Home favourites under 1.50 won 81.0% overall. They beat their margin-free price in 20 of 20 seasons and made a profit in 14 of 20.
The range is still wide. The low was 71.1% in 2005/06, when the Won line barely cleared Priced, and the high was 89.1% in 2012/13. The records hold no matches for 2006/07, so that season is missing from the line.
38-82 matches per season.

| 2008/09 | 77.8% | 72.6% |

| 2021/22 | 72.2% | 69.8% |

| 2024/25 | 85.5% | 73.6% |
| 2025/26 | 85.4% | 74.2% |
Backing every one of these favourites, the worst 100-bet stretch was โ5.0 units and the longest losing run was 4 bets. Even an edge that shows up every season still produces flat spells, and a bettor should expect them.
ยง 4How every selection's hit rate shifts with the home price
This heatmap goes beyond the home win to show how other markets behave as the home price moves. With the home side under 1.50, 1X landed 93.4% and over 1.5 goals landed 81.6%. At the other end, when the home side is 3.50 or longer, X2 landed 82.6%.
The goals rows are the useful surprise. Under 3.5 goals landed only 59.3% with a heavy home favourite, against 77.4% in the 2.00โ2.49 band. Short-priced home sides bring goals, so I would not pair them with an unders angle.
Matches per column: <1.50 1,160, 1.50โ1.99 1,937, 2.00โ2.49 1,942, 2.50โ3.49 1,441, 3.50+ 1,120.

| Home <1.50 | Home 1.50โ1.99 | Home 2.00โ2.49 | Home 2.50โ3.49 | Home 3.50+ | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home win | 81.0% | 56.2% | 45.1% | 31.9% | 17.4% |
| Home or draw (1X) | 93.4% | 81.3% | 73.7% | 62.4% | 41.2% |
| Draw or away (X2) | 19.0% | 43.8% | 54.9% | 68.1% | 82.6% |
| Over 1.5 goals | 81.6% | 76.1% | 69.8% | 70.9% | 73.8% |
| Under 3.5 goals | 59.3% | 73.4% | 77.4% | 77.5% | 70.9% |
For context across the series, the La Liga 1X hit rate of 71.7% ranks 6th of the 20 divisions covered. The double chance lands often here, but a high hit rate is not the same thing as a good return, as the previous charts show.
Almanac verdict
- Stay under 1.50
- The two shortest bands are the only ones that returned a profit at the main price, at +1.8% and +4.3%. Above 1.50 the priced and won figures sit too close together for the margin to leave anything.
- Always take the best price
- Moving from the main price to the best price lifted the 1.30โ1.49 band from +4.3% to +8.3%. On thin edges, the price you take decides the result.
- Skip short-price unders
- With the home side under 1.50, under 3.5 goals landed only 59.3%. If you want a goals angle in these matches, over 1.5 goals at 81.6% fits the profile better.
